Over the course of the last few months, I’ve written about the purpose of using proper SEO processes on your website and how it can help you in the search engines. I’m sure some of you wonder if this stuff actually works.

Of course it works! It works well, even if it might take a consistent process of updating your website with new information in some fashion. But if you’re nowhere right now, it can provide some amazing results, especially if you’re not in a crowded market with things such as retail or even, oddly enough, SEO services.

I’m not going to mention the guy’s name or his business, so you can believe this or not. Two weeks ago I ended up talking to someone on Twitter who happens to live in the Utica area. We were talking in general about technology, and I’ll admit that most of what he does was way over my head. As I’m wont to do I went to take a look at his site and noticed that it had no ranking whatsoever. I looked up his major search term, or what I perceived would be his major search term, and his business didn’t come up on Google at all.

I asked him if I could give him a little bit of advice on his website and he said of course; people will often take free advice. He sent me his email address and I gave him a few pointers, especially directing him to a blog post I wrote titled A Website’s First 3 SEO Tips. The basic problems with his website was that it was heavily laden with photographs and he didn’t tell anyone what it was he did on any of the pages of his site.

I just checked his site a little while ago. He now has a ranking after making a few changes that were mentioned in that post above. I then went to Google and I tested the main keyword phrase I thought he should have been ranked for. When I added Utica, which is where he lives, he now comes up 4th. When I added “central New York” instead he comes up #4. In just 2 short weeks he can now compete with others who do what he does throughout the central New York area.

The disclaimer of course is that not everyone will automatically shoot into the top 5 in their industry. But it’s a certain thing that you will find yourself in a position to compete with those who do what you do by following some basic rules. Do these things, don’t tell your competitors about it, and you could be dominating the search engines in no time.
